Samuel Gompers, the founder of the American Federation of Labor (AFL) said the following about Labor Day:
"Labor Day differs in every essential way from the other holidays of the year in any country. All other holidays are in a more or less degree connected with conflicts and battles of man's prowess over man, of strife and discord for greed and power, of glories achieved by one nation over another. Labor Day...is devoted to no man, living or dead, to no sect, race, or nation."
Labor Day is the celebration of people who work to provide all the things society takes for granted. That's a good way to look at this day and understand the important role labor plays in everyone's life, everyday.
Unions are a force for good and benefit everyone. This day is for all of us to celebrate what we are a part of, which is a way to provide a collective voice to people who otherwise would have none. That is something to be proud of and worthy of a dedicated day of celebration.
HAPPY LABOR DAY CWA LOCAL 13101 and I hope to see you all at the Parade!
